Battery Charge and Discharge Testing Preparation:

Test equipment: Professional charging and discharging test instruments are required, including battery testers, chargers, dischargers, and data logging systems. These devices can accurately control the charging current, voltage, and discharge current. Test battery: Select the battery to be tested and ensure that the battery is in an uncharged or fully charged state. Environmental conditions: Temperature has a great impact on battery performance. The test should be carried out at the specified ambient temperature, generally 25°C.

Test method:

Constant current charge and discharge test: Use constant current to charge and discharge the battery, which can measure the battery capacity, charge and discharge efficiency and cycle life. When charging, use constant current to charge to the upper limit voltage of the battery, such as lithium battery to 4.2V; when discharging, use constant current to discharge to the lower limit voltage, such as lithium battery to 2.5V.

Constant voltage charge test: Commonly used for lithium battery charging to avoid overcharging. First charge with constant current, and after reaching the set voltage, keep charging at this voltage until the current drops to the preset value.

Constant power discharge test: Discharge the battery at constant power until the minimum voltage of the battery is reached, so as to test the discharge performance of the battery under constant power.

Cycle life test: Repeat the charge and discharge cycle until the battery capacity drops to a certain value, such as 80% of the initial capacity, to test the cycle life of the battery. It is necessary to set the termination conditions of the number of charge and discharge cycles or capacity decay, and record the capacity change of each cycle.

Fast charge and discharge test: Use higher current for fast charging and discharging to test the fast charge and discharge capability and performance decay of the battery. It charges quickly with high current, and when the set voltage is reached, it quickly switches to the discharge process.

Test indicators:

Capacity: refers to the amount of electricity that a battery can discharge under certain discharge conditions, usually in ampere-hours (Ah) or kilowatt-hours (kWh), which directly reflects the battery's energy storage capacity.

Internal resistance: The resistance encountered when current flows through the battery, in milliohms (mΩ), including ohmic internal resistance and polarization internal resistance, which affects the battery's charging and discharging efficiency, heat generation, and life.

Energy density: divided into weight energy density and volume energy density, which respectively indicate the energy that a battery can output per unit weight or per unit volume, with basic units of Wh/kg and Wh/L, respectively, affecting the driving distance of electric vehicles and other equipment and the lightweight design of the entire vehicle.

Charge and discharge rate: Indicates the ratio of the battery's charge and discharge current, in C, reflecting the battery's ability to charge and discharge quickly.
